Message of the day· Sunday, August 23

New Mercies for Today

« The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. »

Lamentations 3:22-23

What it says

This passage from Lamentations assures us of God's unchanging character and continuous grace. It emphasizes that God's faithful love (hesed) never stops, no matter our circumstances or past failures. His mercies, fresh acts of kindness and compassion, are renewed each day, like a fresh start with the rising sun. This isn't a one-time event, but a daily promise. For families facing morning chaos, or individuals beginning a demanding workday, this means every new day brings a fresh supply of His goodness, not just a leftover from yesterday. It highlights God's unwavering commitment to His people, always present, always extending kindness, ensuring we are never without His support.

What it touches without saying it

Behind the rush of a new day, there's often a quiet dread: the exhaustion from yesterday's battles, the shame of past mistakes, or the fear that today will bring even greater challenges, leaving us depleted. We might start a new work project feeling overwhelmed, or approach a difficult family conversation expecting the worst. The hidden expectation is that we must somehow pull ourselves up by our bootstraps, relying on dwindling reserves of strength and optimism. This verse gently confronts the pride that assumes our own capabilities are the source of our strength, or the despair that believes our mistakes define our future.

What it asks of you today

Today, when facing your most draining task at work or a moment of personal doubt, pause. Verbally acknowledge, "God's mercies are new for me right now." Then, take one small, faith-filled step forward on that specific task, trusting His fresh grace.

Today's prayer

Lord, I thank You that Your mercies are new for me this morning. Help me to truly lean into Your fresh grace and faithfulness as I navigate the day ahead, especially in areas where I feel weak or exhausted. Amen.
