True Riches, True Life

« As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life. »

1 Timothy 6:17-19

What it says

This passage instructs those with material wealth—or really, any resources—not to be arrogant about what they have, nor to place their ultimate confidence in the fleeting and uncertain nature of money or possessions. Instead, their hope should be firmly placed in God, who is the generous provider of all good things for our enjoyment. It then calls these individuals to actively engage in doing good, to be abundant in good deeds, and to live with open-handed generosity, always ready to share what they have. The purpose of such a life of giving is to lay down a solid foundation for their future, securing a lasting treasure and taking hold of what is truly eternal life, which far surpasses the present age.

What it touches without saying it

Behind our diligent efforts to accumulate money, property, or career achievements often lurks a deep-seated fear of future instability and the unspoken expectation that more resources will finally bring ultimate security and peace. We might fear the shame of not providing enough for our family, or the exhaustion of endless striving, leading us to cling tightly to our assets. There can also be an unconscious pride in our financial independence or successes, making us hesitant to share or rely on God's provision. This passage quietly confronts the subtle illusion that material accumulation can truly secure our future or define our deepest worth, revealing our misplaced hopes.

What it asks of you today

Consider a specific resource you possess today—whether it’s time, a particular skill, or a small financial amount. Prayerfully identify one concrete way you can share it with someone in need or invest it in a good work today. This could mean offering practical help to a colleague, making a small donation to a local charity, or sharing a meal with a lonely neighbor.

Today's prayer

Lord, open my eyes today to the abundance you have placed in my hands. Help me to loosen my grip on what is fleeting and to courageously share your blessings, trusting that true life is found in you alone.
