Rethinking Our Toil

« Now therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider your ways. You have sown much, and harvested little. You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes. »

Haggai 1:5-6 (ESV)

What it says

The prophet Haggai delivers a direct message from God to a people deeply engaged in their daily lives and work. They are expending significant effort—planting crops, providing for their families, and earning wages. Yet, despite all this hard work, they are not experiencing the expected returns. Their harvests are meager, their food and drink don't bring lasting satisfaction, their clothes offer no warmth, and their earnings seem to vanish without making a real impact, as if into a purse with holes. God calls them to a serious pause, urging them to reflect deeply on their current priorities and actions, suggesting that their methods or focus are misaligned, leading to a persistent sense of lack and unfulfillment in their material provisions.

What it touches without saying it

Beneath the surface of this constant striving for more, a quiet exhaustion and a deep-seated frustration often reside. We pour our energy into our work, our finances, or managing our household, only to feel like we're barely treading water or that our efforts aren't producing genuine security or contentment. There’s an unspoken fear that no matter how hard we try, true abundance or lasting satisfaction for our family will remain out of reach. We might secretly expect that persistent effort alone should be enough to achieve our goals, yet we constantly wonder why the fruits of our labor, in a career or personal project, never quite measure up to the time and sacrifice invested.

What it asks of you today

For today, pause from your usual financial or work-related striving. Take 15 minutes to review your last week's spending or your current task list, specifically looking for one area where significant effort might be yielding minimal fruit, and prayerfully ask God for clarity on its true value and purpose.

Today's prayer

Lord, I confess I often feel the weariness of striving without seeing the fruit I desire. Help me to truly consider my ways today, trusting that You can show me where to redirect my effort for Your glory and my genuine peace. Amen.
