Beyond Our Own Strength

« Then he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts.” »

Zechariah 4:6

What it says

This passage, spoken to Zerubbabel concerning the rebuilding of the temple, declares that significant undertakings are not achieved through human strength or strategic power alone. It emphasizes that God's work, especially when it seems daunting or impossible based on our limited resources, is ultimately accomplished by His Spirit. For Zerubbabel, facing immense obstacles and a small, discouraged workforce, this was a profound reassurance that the success of the temple project didn't depend on their military might or political influence. It's a foundational truth: God’s plans are fulfilled through His divine enablement, not merely by our strenuous efforts or impressive capabilities. This applies to any large project we undertake or a difficult family situation we face.

What it touches without saying it

Behind the relentless drive to achieve at work or the burden of family responsibilities often lies a deep-seated fear: the fear that if we don't exert every ounce of our own "might and power," everything will collapse. We exhaust ourselves, convinced that our personal willpower or cleverness is the only thing standing between success and failure in a big decision. This expectation leads to an overwhelming sense of responsibility, pride in our self-sufficiency, and deep exhaustion when things inevitably feel too heavy. We subconsciously believe our individual effort is the primary engine, rather than a response to God's enablement.

What it asks of you today

Today, identify one specific decision or task at work or within your family that you're currently trying to force through your own might. Before you act on it, pause for two minutes and consciously release it into God's Spirit, asking for His enablement instead of relying solely on your strength.

Today's prayer

Lord, I confess my tendency to rely on my own strength and ingenuity. Help me today to step back from my striving and lean into Your Spirit's power to guide and accomplish what truly matters. May my actions be a reflection of Your enabling grace, not my own weary might.
