Message of the day· Friday, October 16

The Anchor in the Storm

« Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation. God, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the deer's; he makes me tread on my high places. »

Habakkuk 3:17-19

What it says

This passage describes a scenario of complete economic and agricultural devastation. The prophet envisions a world where every source of food and income has vanished: no fruit from trees or vines, no oil from olives, barren fields, and empty livestock pens. Despite this profound loss and the absence of any tangible provision, the prophet declares his intention to still find joy and rejoice in the Lord, his God and deliverer. He affirms that God himself is his source of strength, enabling him to navigate difficult circumstances with surefootedness, much like a deer on rugged terrain, ascending to places that seem insurmountable.

What it touches without saying it

This passage quietly confronts the deep-seated fear of financial insecurity and the exhaustion that comes from relentlessly trying to secure one's future. We often tie our joy and sense of stability to our income, job performance, or the health of our family's finances. When our work efforts don't yield expected results, or when unexpected expenses arise, a quiet panic can settle in. The underlying expectation is that if we work hard, things *should* go well, and when they don't, it shakes our foundation, exposing our reliance on worldly provisions more than on God's steadfast presence.

What it asks of you today

Today, if you face a specific financial concern or feel the pressure of unfulfilled work efforts, take five minutes to list three things God has provided for you this week, however small. Then, verbally thank Him for each one, choosing to rejoice in His past faithfulness as your strength.

Today's prayer

Lord, in moments when my circumstances feel shaky or my provisions seem uncertain, help me to remember that You are my ultimate source of joy and strength. May I anchor my hope in You alone, trusting in Your faithful care to make my steps sure even on difficult paths. Amen.
