Your Work, His Reward

« Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. »

Colossians 3:23–24 ESV

What it says

This passage instructs us on how to approach all our tasks, whether at our job, within our family, or in our personal responsibilities. It calls us to work "heartily," meaning with full effort, enthusiasm, and dedication, not just superficially. The key motivation given isn't to please human bosses, colleagues, or family members, but to perform these tasks "as for the Lord." This shift in perspective means our ultimate audience and judge is God Himself. It also promises a future "inheritance as your reward" directly from the Lord, reminding us that our service is ultimately to Christ. Every chore, every project, every interaction becomes an act of worship when done with this mindset, elevating the mundane to the sacred.

What it touches without saying it

Behind the daily grind of work or caring for a family, there often lies a deep weariness. We might feel unseen, unappreciated, or that our efforts go unnoticed by those around us. There's a subtle fear of not being good enough, or a resentment that others aren't pulling their weight. Sometimes, pride whispers that we deserve more recognition for our hard work. Or, we might operate under the expectation that our value is tied to our visible output or the approval of others, leading to burnout when those external validations don't arrive. This passage quietly confronts these internal struggles by redirecting our focus from earthly recognition to divine approval.

What it asks of you today

Today, choose one task you usually find tedious or unrewarding – perhaps washing dishes, answering emails, or completing a specific work assignment. Before you begin, pause for one minute and silently commit that specific task to the Lord, determining to do it heartily as if serving Him directly. Notice if this shift changes your approach or attitude.

Today's prayer

Lord, I confess my tendency to seek human approval and become discouraged by the mundane. Help me today to see every task as an opportunity to serve You heartily, trusting in Your perfect reward and presence.
