The Trap of Carrying It All

« You and the people with you will certainly wear yourselves out, for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to do it alone. »

Exodus 18:18

What it says

Moses was sitting from morning until evening, trying to single-handedly resolve every dispute, legal complaint, and conflict in Israel. When his father-in-law Jethro watched the process, he delivered a blunt assessment: this is not good, and it will break you. Jethro did not question Moses’s devotion or his calling. He pointed out a physical and emotional reality: human bandwidth has limits created by God. Trying to manage every email, oversee every decision at work, or solve every crisis in your family yourself does not prove faithfulness; it guarantees exhaustion. Moses thought he was serving people, but his refusal to share the burden was bottlenecking the entire community and running him into the ground. God’s design for leadership and stewardship never involved solitary heroics.

What it touches without saying it

Beneath the refusal to delegate lies a subtle pride: the quiet belief that if you do not handle it personally, it will fall apart or be done wrong. At work or in running a household, being the indispensable problem-solver feeds our identity. We complain about being overwhelmed, yet we secretly enjoy being needed. Handing over responsibility requires trusting imperfect people with imperfect outcomes. It exposes our deep-seated anxiety about losing control and forces us to admit that we are finite creatures, not the savior of our workplace or our home.

What it asks of you today

Identify one task today—a work assignment, a domestic chore, or a scheduling decision—that you have been hoarding out of perfectionism. Hand it over entirely to a coworker, spouse, or teammate before 5:00 PM. Give them clear instructions, but do not micromanage or redo their work once it is done.

Today's prayer

Lord, forgive me for acting as though everything depends on my strength and control. Teach me to accept my human limits and to trust the people You have placed beside me. Give me the humility to share the load today and rest in Your sovereignty.
