Blessing to Mend Relationships
« Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. »
What it says
In family life or our close relationships, harsh words can sometimes slip out. A misunderstanding, an argument, and suddenly walls are built. The heart tightens, resentment sets in. But God shows us a way to overcome these difficult moments.
Another Way is Possible
When someone in your family has hurt you, your first reaction might be to defend yourself. To strike back, or to withdraw into silence. This is a human reaction, but it is not the path the Lord offers us. He calls us to a greater strength, that of active love.
This path is not easy. It requires breaking the natural cycle of retaliation. You must consciously choose to do something different from what your wounded heart dictates. But that is where God's true power in our relationships lies. It is a concrete act of faith.
Choosing to Bless, Even When It's Hard
Today's verse tells us not to repay evil for evil. On the contrary, we must *bless*. What does it mean to bless someone who has wronged you? It means wishing them well, praying for them. It means speaking words of life over that person, even in silence before God.
It's deciding not to let bitterness grow within you. It's an act of spiritual warfare against division. A gentle word, filled with the Spirit, can defuse a conflict. As the Bible says:
> Proverbs 15:1 (ESV): "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."
To bless is also to seek opportunities for an attitude of grace. Sometimes, it's a simple act of listening. Other times, it's praying for God to act in the other person's life. It's sowing a seed of kindness where there are thorns.
An Extended Hand Changes Everything
When you choose to bless instead of curse, you unlock something in the spiritual realm. You open the door for God's action. Your extended hand, even symbolically, can become a bridge. A bridge towards understanding, towards forgiveness, towards mending relationships.
It's a powerful testimony of your faith. It shows that you believe in God's ability to transform hearts. Including yours, to give you the strength to love beyond the hurt. It is not your ability, but His in you that will act.
For Your Day
Take a moment today to think about a strained family or friendly relationship. Instead of dwelling on grievances, choose to bless that person. Pray for them sincerely. Then, if the Spirit prompts you, take a small concrete step: a kind word, a call, or just attentive listening. Let God work through your attitude of grace.
