Dreaming of Falling into the Void: What Does the Bible Say?

4 min read · May 5, 2026

Falling endlessly, losing your footing, freefalling: this is humanity's most shared nightmare. Three biblical interpretations coexist.

1. A Fear of Losing Control

Often the soul is saying, "I no longer have a grip on my life." A season of transition, a sudden change, a decision that overwhelms you. Biblical answer: Psalm 55:23 — "Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you."

2. An Attack of Discouragement

When the fall is repeated, terrifying you upon waking, it is sometimes a spirit of discouragement trying to impose an image of failure on you. You must rebuke it in the name of Jesus, declaring Psalm 37:24: "Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down, for the Lord upholds him with his hand."

3. A Call to Let Go

More rarely, falling can be a call to let yourself be carried. You are clinging to something God is asking you to release: a position, a relationship, control over someone else.

What to Do This Morning?

Identify your season. Ask: "Lord, am I holding onto something I need to release? Or are You inviting me to lean on You again?" Note the answer.
