Dreaming of a Deceased Person: Message from the Afterlife, Grief, or Attack?

You've dreamed of someone you've lost. This is one of the most emotionally charged dreams. Here's how to interpret it without falling into communication with the dead (forbidden—Deuteronomy 18:11) or coldly dismissing all meaning.

Three Possible Interpretations

  • 1) Grief processing: your soul is completing something. Very common within 2 years after a death. This is healthy.
  • 2) Call to prayer: sometimes the Spirit uses the memory of a deceased person to invite you to intercede for THEIR descendants—children, spouse, friends who are still alive.
  • 3) Attack by imitation: very rare, but real. A spirit can take on the appearance of a deceased person to convey a false message to you. Indicator: the 'deceased' person asks you to do something that contradicts the Bible.

    • What the Bible Absolutely Forbids

    Communicating with the dead (1 Samuel 28—the consultation at Endor is severely judged). Therefore: do not respond in the dream, do not solicit, do not provoke. If a deceased figure asks you to do something, examine it in light of the Word.

    What the Bible Allows

    Honoring the memory, giving thanks for the person's life, completing a forgiveness (given or requested) that death had not allowed. These dreams often bring a deep peace upon waking—that is their signature.

    If the Dream Returns and Troubles You

    Simple prayer: “Father, in the name of Jesus, I commit [name] into Your hands. If the Spirit is speaking to me through this dream, grant me discernment. If it is from another source, I reject it by the blood of Jesus.” Then sleep in peace.
